Lucifer isn't stable anymore. The Temple is protected against angels coming inside. But I -- I don't know if he's going to come after me.

[There's a long silence before her breath hitches. She's trying not to cry.]

I'm so sorry, I didn't --

[But she stops herself before she grits her teeth. Strength, dammit.]

I played a card too early. This is my fault. I'll fix it, but I need --

[Pause.]

... I'm going to need help.

[Filtered to Hitsugaya // Private // Unhackable]

[This -- takes some doing, and there is a pause, before Rei speaks. It is quiet and reserved.]

Castiel and I are going to ward your house against angels so they can't get inside. It won't take very long. And I need --

[Pause.]

I really -- need your help.

[It's not a question.]

I trapped Lucifer in holy fire.

[Pause.]

... he attacked me and I -- it was an instinct.

Tch. I thought you'd at least wait another month before you went through with it.

[... that is not the reaction she had been expecting.]

[And, weirdly, that makes her feel -- a lot better.

... not by much, but enough to choke out a weak attempt at a laugh. It doesn't quite get there, but she doesn't sound nearly so defeated. There's the tiniest spark of life back in her tone.]

I'm an overachiever. What can I say.

Obviously I overestimated your patience.

[He saw this coming a mile away, Rei. How could he not? You're so enthralled in angel business that no matter how much you insist you want to protect people from them and even them from themselves, this was inevitable. Having known that, however, at least gave him the advantage of not being surprised.]

What did he do.

[Maintaining the status quo had worked, for awhile -- and Rei had managed to make leaps and bounds with Castiel. But Lucifer is incapable of change -- and Rei, in finally using the ability she had worked on, had done it on instinct, not as part of a plan. The scrambling of the fallout rested squarely on her shoulders. The only thing she could do now was fight to protect the people she loved and accept her fate.]

... I don't know.

[It's a quiet, honest answer.]

He used a lot of knives, at first. That's when I trapped him in the fire. But -- it wasn't strong enough. His powers were weakened, but not gone completely. He made the cuts bigger and put -- something inside me to make it hurt.

[She's silent for a moment.]

I'll be okay. That's not the problem now.

Why did he do it.

[Because, no. Rei. This may not be your problem now, but it's most definitely his.]

[... a long exhale.]

I went to talk to Jinx and he interrupted us and started -- preaching at me about destiny and setting people back on the right path and he did it to get underneath my skin and I -- called him a hypocrite.

[Why, exactly, Lucifer reacted so violently, Rei wasn't sure. She had said far worse to his face and walked away unscathed.]

You didn't think to speak with her somewhere else?

[That doesn't sound like Hino. Either she went to Lucifer's home or Lucifer followed them.]

We were away from the Chateau.

[Quietly.]

He came to find Jinx. He can't feel me anymore, because of Cas' sigils. But when he found me there, he stuck around.

[Rei pauses.]

... I overestimated my faith in her.

[And that is said a lot more coldly.]

You shouldn't have had faith in her. No matter her connection to you, she also has one to Lucifer. No matter who she's more loyal to, so long as she chooses to affiliate with the enemy, you shouldn't take chances based on ridiculous expectations.

[He's seen what people are capable of when they're just desperate not to lose someone, even knowing exactly what that someone is capable of.]

[She's silent, for a long moment, before something downright miraculous happens.]

I know.

It's not going to happen again.

[With anyone. Ever. Again.]

Good.

[He takes a breath, then releases it.]

If that's not what you're worried about, then what is?

... he's going to retaliate and he's going to start with the people I care about.

[It's said quietly.]

Castiel and I can protect your home so he can't get into it.

That's fine, but... You know full well Sasuke and I spend a great deal of time away from the house.

[That's not about to change. Hitsugaya can't give Sasuke orders, and Hitsugaya himself has to be sure they have food on the table.]

I know.

[She says it heavily.]

I'm the only person in this city that can create holy fire. I don't know -- how else to keep him at bay. And I'm --

[... sigh.]

I'm not exactly in top condition.

[There was just no point in asking how she's faring since she's well enough to talk.]

How does holy fire become holy?

... in their world, it's made from a specific oil from Jerusalem. But my fire is created through talismans and blessed seals -- I bless it the same way I do my ofuda. It's always been that way. I only had to make it into a ring to trap them.

Then you could teach anyone who is capable of wielding fire how to bless it in that way?

... I don't know.

[It's an honest answer.]

I've never met anyone else who can bless things like I can. Castiel can redraw the talismans like a Xerox machine but he can't actually bless them like I can. But -- I could try.

Who else do you know other than Sasuke?

If it's the fact that it's blessed that does damage, are you capable of blessing other objects for a similar effect?

If it has to do with religion, would another spiritual figure be able to do the same?

Roy Mustang works with fire. And I can bless objects -- I've blessed the Temple against harm. As for religion, I don't think it matters. I was born with this gift.
