[Rei is sitting in a chair, in Castiel's impromptu study, with a worn book in her hands. An anthology of ghost stories. And, because of simple curiosity:]

Do you believe in ghosts?

[Scientists? What scientists? Fran is going to handle that part.]

I guess they're not really so terrifying when you know what's real and what isn't.

I have heard that humans believe that much fear is of the unknown rather than something in specific.

That's true -- but you don't think it's the same for angels, too?

[Rei rests her chin in her palm.]

Your fears are based in the unknown much more than anything specific.

My fears are very specific. Knowing what might occur doesn't lessen it.

Your fears are as vague and uncertain as anything else. What you're afraid of can't be cured by staying away from a stepladder or stepping on a bug. They're unknowns in the dark.

[Insanity. Losing control. And Rei supposes losing the people you love is a specific fear, a very real one, but she won't name them out loud when Castiel has difficulty enough coping with emotion, let alone what he fears.]

That's a lot scarier than something you can see, feel, hold. Because you don't know when it'll come.

[It's quiet; he's trying to avoid thinking of any of those things she didn't mention, glad she didn't.]

Ghost are simple to deal with.

[Which makes them less frightening by far.]

It's a lot harder for people who have never seen them before to accept that.

Not everyone grew up with spirits or ghosts.
