[Rei is in the kitchen, which isn't strictly unusual, as Usagi ~~tops her into cooking her favorite things~~ eats a lot of food and, therefore, someone must cook it... but what Rei is doing in the kitchen is something of a sight.

Her hands are covered in a thick, dark, sticky liquid and she looks like she's inches away from throwing the pot in front of her on the floor in a fit of frustration. The counter-top is covered with various cookbooks, what remains of their sugar stores, a heap of dark powder, and a thermometer.

There is a gooey pile to her right of 'failed attempts' at whatever the hell she's attempting to do.

She is stirring the pot almost viciously -- until something within the pot causes Hino Rei's patience to snap.]

Ugh, this is the dumbest tradition ever! Who thought this was a good idea!?

[The PCD shuts off before Rei has a chance to throw something at it.]

[Laugh all you want, buddy. Sebastian is always there for you and yes she mistakes the motives, but that's what she sees.]

Allow me to explain something to you, Princess.

[His voice has gone soft, just this edge of dangerous.]

Sebastian is bound to me, leash and collar, flesh and blood, spirit and soul.

He entered into this service, perfectly willing to heed my every command.

Do you know why?

For your soul. But one way or another, it won't end like that.

[Any humor completely disappears. His eye grows cold, and he touches the edge of the screen. His voice is cold, distant as winter skies.]

My existence in the world of the living has a very specific purpose. When I have my wish, I will pay the toll.

I accepted this arrangement. I will walk this path.

[He stares back at her. For a moment, there's just a flicker of it. The humanity, the pain, the edge of the lost child. Whether it's real or if it's a ruse -- sometimes, even Ciel doesn't know.]

[But the voice comes out of his mouth is nothing like the child in his eyes. It's hollow, dark, and angry. So breathlessly, terribly angry.

And worse, it's an anger borne from pain.]

You wouldn't understand.

I can't, if you don't tell me. That's why I asked.

I want revenge.

[It's cold, so icy, a breath over a shattered glass window held together only by the pressure of the pane.

He wants more than revenge. He wants them to know, wants them to feel what he felt, hopeless, powerless, terrified, broken.]

Revenge? For what?

You have enough information. If it's truly important to you, you'll figure it out.

[Or ask Rei. Or Negi. Because fuck explaining.]

Then don't ever say I don't understand again! You want to pretend that so you don't have to talk to me, because you're afraid of what you'll hear and that you might have to think about what you're doing. But you can't decide it for yourself. If I will or won't understand, that can't even be decided until you tell me.

[Again, rage crosses his eyes, hot this time -- because she's touching on the uncomfortable edges of where his capacity for reason begins to erode. Ciel's anger is single-minded, but no less deadly for it.]

I don't have to justify myself to an ignorant, naive little child.

You have power, yes -- but do you think you can protect everyone with that power, with your own hands, just because it's your wish? Do you truly believe you can put an end to hatred, violence, fear, corrupted perversion and filth -- to the evil in the hearts of man?

That's the future of my world. I've seen it with my own eyes. It's a future we sacrificed, fought, and died to make because it was worth it to end suffering and violence and pain.

No, but we can become strong enough to move on from the past.

[Silence, on the other end of the feed. She's worked so long, so hard, to inspire hope. He feels it. That want, that dragging, painful want, the barest edge of hope.

He hates her for it. That she can make him feel this. That even for the barest of seconds, she can make him doubt himself, his wish, his goal, his promises.

She doesn't understand what she's asking. What he's built his life on, his heart, everything-]

[She lives what she preaches. She's a girl who's seen her world destroyed and her battles were still never about vengeance; a girl who will lose everything she cares about again and again and still reach out her hand to the one who takes them from her. She believes, endlessly.]

Ciel?

[Without Rei there, he's not sure of what might have happened. The answer doesn't come right away, and the smile is clearly a fabrication, a parody of feeling.]

You promise everything, Princess.

[It's a whisper, almost gentle.]

But when I leave here, I will have never heard your voice.

But a part of you will remember when you did.

[She says this with utter conviction, because even the Moonlight Knight was created from the part of Mamoru that still knew her when all his memories were gone. And the memories that carried over from their hearts were what brought the senshi together again each time they forget or were reborn.]

... it won't be enough.

[Very quietly. To bring him back to reality.]

[He closes his eyes at her voice. Strangely, it does seem to calm him. Bring him back to himself.]

Calm down and turn off the feed.

[She can't tell Usagi to stop, but she can avoid disaster by talking to Ciel directly.]

And go for a walk.

[He sideglances at her, still unbearably angry. Normally, he'd reject anything that sounded like an order from her, but he's too far out of his comfort zone to argue.]

Talk to her.

[Simply, not even terribly snappy. He hates this feeling, of not being in control.]
