[It isn't just that, really, it's... everything. The loss of Minako and Hotaru within two weeks, the stress of the past events... this is just the straw that breaks the camel's back.]

[A couple of hours later, Al showed up, a package of cookies in his hand. They weren't warm, but they would do in a pinch.]

... two moons really do make everything brighter.

[She's sitting on the edge of the lake -- probably too close for comfort, considering the stupid squid, but Rei doesn't seem to particularly care. She doesn't glance up at Al's arrival.]

Yeah.

[A little check to make sure she's wearing warm enough clothes. It's still damn cold at night. But then he sits down with her, keeping an eye on the still water.

Silently, he opens the cookie package and offers it to her, then sets it between them.]

[She takes one, wordlessly, though it's more to be polite than out of actual hunger.]

If there's anything I know about having a difficult goal, is that you just have to keep trying. Even if it doesn't happen right away, your efforts will have meaning in other ways.

[He sets a hand on her shoulder.]

[She doesn't shrug off the shoulder, for the time being.]

And no matter how hard I try, it doesn't get any better.

It'll be painful for her, more than most, definitely... because she cares so much. But she will be able to continue on. Especially if she has you.

She can't rely on that.

[It's quiet, and harsh, but it's true. Rei is at risk to leave, just like any of them are.]

[That is quite possibly the most difficult thing Rei has ever admitted in her entire life.]

Maybe not, but she's strong. ... stronger than almost anyone I've ever met.

She's been through a lot.

[So has she, but it always seems like Usagi has been through more.]

Yes.

Hopefully, we can protect her from what we can.

There's only so much you can protect someone from.
