[There's a silence, for a long moment -- before Rei finally works up the nerve to say something. She sounds tired.]
It's getting a lot harder to keep believing everything has a purpose in this place.
[There's a long rush of air as Rei exhales.]
It's almost as if the Animus don't want us here -- but if that's true, then why have I been here for over a year? Why have some people been here longer? What makes some of us different?
-- if anyone's got any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
[The only people Rei would need to tell, about Haruka vanishing, would be the senshi themselves. And the senshi, being the senshi, already know. So why repeat something painful?
But all the same, she seems to want to say more -- before she ends the feed.]

[Sigh. He looks young- and tired.]
I suppose it's too late to say that I meant 'you' in the plural sense. I never presumed to know anything about you, personally. I'm sorry if I offended you.
[rofl, Nat is pissing everyone and their mother off forever what is this.]
Right. Sorry. I didn't mean to bite your head off. I'm just --
Long month.
[A tight lipped pause, before he glances down. How do social interactions work. Obviously, treating everyone like government officials hasn't been working out for him. But people? How the hell does one deal with people- especially when they're as emotionally charged as this?]
...If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.
You don't do this very often.
[It isn't a question.
The anti-social types are painfully obvious to her.]
He sighs and sets about straightening his shirt cuffs.]
I worked in the government, you know. [Airily, like he's just passing the time.] With a lot of people. People I had to step lightly around, people I was forced to respect, because that's politics.
[Another little pause.] One of my tasks was to put out propaganda, supporting the war in America. I had to understand the common people in order to do this effectively. I studied them- and for the longest time, I thought I was successful. [Why is he even telling her this. Nat manages a wry smile.]
I've only recently learned that I've been wrong for years. You'll have to bear with me.
[Pause.]
I've met worse cases than you.
[It's -- supposed to be a compliment.]
Consider yourself forgiven.
[He raises an eyebrow at the 'compliment', before shrugging. It was probably true.]
Nevertheless, I meant it when I offered my help. I intend to change things for the better in any way I can.
[But not a lot. Rei doesn't pay much mind to it.]
Thanks, for the offer. We need someone like you.
[Nathaniel pauses a moment- that compliment, of course, goes straight to his head, and he smiles.]
Glad I could be of assistance. As soon as I find my feet here, I'll be looking for ways to transition my abilities to work properly in this place.
[Curious, and customary concern, for someone new.]
[Rubbing at the back of his neck.]
The healing woman got annoyed with me, so I left the clinic a few days ago.
[So awkward.]
It's a little complicated.
She just... thought I was being presumptuous.
What did you say?
That with all due respect, I can't accept the fact that my presence here will not make a difference.
Everyone's presence makes some sort of difference. Whether or not you're going to have a big impact is up to you, not anyone else.
But taming chaos is next to impossible.
In discord, there is suffering, pain. Things slip through the cracks. People fall prey to irrelevant trivialities, and there is little strategic progress. As a principle, magicians harness chaos. They restrict it, bind it, and turn it into order and obedience.
[Nathaniel thinks for a moment.]
I may not be successful. But I will do the best that I can to make this a better place for everyone to coexist in.
[It's said genuinely.]
You and I have the same goal, then. I hope you have more luck than I have.
[He swallows hard, trying to quell the arrogance, the egotism- the lone wolf part of him which preferred the glory in doing some amazing feat alone.]
It's, as you said, a near impossible task. I'll need all the help I can get.
Better me than half of the so-called important people. Have you met the angels yet? Most of them are totally useless.
[It's an attempt to lighten the mood. He strikes her as something of a 'I take things too seriously' type.]
Only one. He was helpful enough.
You have a higher patience level than I do.
Politics.
