History: Sailor Moon Wiki Hino Rei Wiki

Personality: Your first introduction to Hino Rei is when she assaults the heroine of the series (you know the one) in the face with one of her handcrafted talismans to ward off evil. And, really, this introduction sums up Rei to a T -- she's a shoot first ask questions later kind of girl. If there's a door in your way, guaranteed Rei will be the first one to suggest that she just knock it down. Her chosen designation of fire is no coincidence -- she is fiery, somewhat unpredictable, a little callous, and a bit rough around the edges. But like all good shoujo animes, there has to be a tsundere character, and that tsundere character is Hino Rei.

While on the surface Rei is brash and dismissive of Usagi's antics (and, really, the antics of the rest of her friends), she is kind and sweet to the core. She brushes off Minako's love-crazed rants and Usagi's mooning over Mamoru, but deep down, she very much wants that life for herself. A collector of manga and a watcher of boys, Rei lives in a Shinto temple and wishes to be head priestess one day, but that doesn't necessarily mean she has to give up her other pursuits in the meantime. She wants to be a voice actress, a model, travel the world -- the sky is the limit for Rei and she intends to accomplish every single one of those things before her time on this planet is done. A typical teenage girl living with a lot of adult responsibilities, Rei tries her best to manage both her senshi life and her teenage life with an air of grace that the other senshi manage. It's often a failure, but both are extraordinarily important to her.

Fiercely loyal to her mission and to Usagi, Rei will do anything and everything within her power to ensure her safety and their mission's success. You need a person to go into the pits of Hell in order to get the job done? Call Sailor Mars, because she'll get it done and be back home in time for tea. She has died for her mission and her friends and would happily do it again, without regret or remorse. Her position as a senshi -- a guardian of the universe -- is something she takes very seriously and she often chastises Usagi for not doing the same. "We're soldiers, stop obsessing over boys!" And though Rei is often hypocritical in that statement, she means it every single time. Their duty is what binds them together, along with their friendship. It's something to be taken seriously, not for granted.

Rei is harsh with her friends, she is encouraging when it counts. She pushes Minako to pursue her dreams of being the next idol of Japan. She encourages Makoto to live life as she wants to live it and not be brought down by how others perceive her. When Ami has difficulty fitting in, Rei is one of the first to tell her that she's so brilliant she doesn't need anything else. And whenever Usagi is down in the dumps about poor grades or a failure of leadership, Rei is always at her right hand to tell her that she needs to pick up her head and keep going. Rei, who was once the outcast of the school system for being the "freaky witch girl", is the backbone of the senshi when it matters the most. She drags them forward when they don't think they can keep going anymore.

Adstringendum has given Rei a more callous approach to individuals. She's a bit less optimistic and more shrewd given the big bads. She's older, more skilled, more practiced in fighting, and has survived living in literal hell. She's still the same confident, brash, occasionally reckless shoujo powerhouse than she has always been -- but she's grown up a bit, become more of a natural leader. And she had been looking forward to going home, when THIS HAPPENED. Rude.

So, in short -- Rei can be a jerk. Well, scratch that, she kind of is a jerk, but she is one of the most loving, compassionate, determined, loyal jerks you will ever meet in your entire life. And you would be lucky to count her as a friend, because once Rei decides you are her friend, nothing is going to change that. Literally nothing.

Hope you enjoy your enemies burning to death, because that's what's gonna happen.

Abilities: Both Rei and Sailor Mars have their own respective abilities! WELCOME TO ANIME HELL, FOLKS.

Rei: Rei is mildly psychic, able to see into the future of her own volition. By the end of the series, she has a pretty clear grasp on her powers, and is shown to be able to predict lottery readings and other such things that are totally not an abuse of her power at all. She is also gifted with sight, unwanted premonitions of terrible events that are to come -- those she has no control over and they come and go as they please.

She can also sense spirits and dark energy, and ... well, energy in general. I have a permissions post in her journal available for characters to inform me whether or not Rei can sense their energy or if they would rather not. :)

Mars: Sailor Mars is gifted with the power of ~*~flame and passion~*~ which includes a pretty excellent shoujo transformation sequence and a pretty sweet outfit. This outfit is compromised of magical energy and seems to protect her even though that makes no goddamn sense, but it's a shoujo anime, so deal with it, it's the power of love. She is shown to have a skilled control over fire and crafts it into a lot of cool attacks. Her most powerful one is the Mars Flame Sniper, which is literally a giant flaming bow of death. She also has excellent aim with said flaming bow of death, so please avoid pissing her off. (Also, all gifts Rei has transcend into Mars, but not the other way around -- Rei cannot summon a giant flaming bow of death on command unless she is transformed, but Mars can sense dark energy).

Augment Skillset: Securities.

Sample: This is new.

Rei, clad in boots, jeans, and a loose sweater, has explored as much of the Marsiva as she's able. This obviously isn't Adstringendum, and it isn't home, either -- so either Castiel's ritual screwed up or someone else has kidnapped her and put her on a spaceship. Apparently.

It takes about five minutes before Rei eventually figures out how to address the network -- her old PCD is in her pocket and is officially defunct, unable to send out messages, but this new device seems to connect. But before she does, she draws in a breath, letting it out slowly. Brushes her hair into something acceptable, pursing her lips to figure out what to say...

"Ask for people who know who you are," Rei says to herself, fiddling with the communication device. "Quick facts, nothing else. You know you're on the Marsiva, you know you're in space, you know you have something in your head... what don't you know? You don't know if any the senshi are here, you don't know if any enemies are here -- "

Rei pauses and peers at her device.

It has a red blinking light on the side.

She stares at it for a moment before her lips twist into a scowl, and she huffs to herself, staring into the camera, almost daring for anyone to let her know it was recording the entire time.

"My name is Rei -- who here knows my face?"

Nailed it.

Rei is a shinto priestess with the rare gift of 1) sensing spirits and 2) sensing darkness/evil energy. She also has a powerful sense of intuition (which means she can usually tell when someone is lying and has a "gut feeling" about most people she meets, be it good or bad) and can see the future! What a broken piece of garbage, right.

So basically, what I need you to do is to comment below!

1) Is your character a spirit? This could count as a shinigami, some sort of spiritual being... whatever. If so, Rei can probably vaguely sense your character, and get a read on their energy!

2) Does your character have a high spiritual sense? Rei has the ability to sense massive amounts of energy, and the darker it is, the sharper she can sense it. For example, if you are Satan (you think I'm joking, but I am not), Rei can probably feel you coming from a mile away.

3) Are you comfortable with Rei getting a read on your character should they meet in person? Be honest! Rei can't shut off her powers, but I'm flexible as to what she can sense and what she can't. Her powers are vaguely defined in canon, and you never know what can get messed up in the multiverse! We can always plot out something. :)

And look, a handy text box:

Background: Sailor Moon Wiki Hino Rei Wiki

Abilities/Additional Notes: Rei and Sailor Mars both have unique abilities!

She can also sense spirits (though this was her very first death price in Adstringendum and will therefore be nixed upon her return) and dark energy. I have a permissions' post in her journal available for characters to inform me whether or not Rei can sense their energy or if they would rather not.

(Also, all gifts Rei has transcend into Mars, but not the other way around -- Rei cannot summon a giant flaming bow of death on command unless she is transformed, but Mars can sense dark energy).

Additional; Rei is going to come back to Adstringendum and reclaim her memories per the rules -- slowly but surely. :) She'll come back remembering names and faces and that she's in Adstringendum, but specific events are gonna take a lot longer to sink in. She should have her head on straight in about a month.

First-Person Sample: [A rather familiar face to some people will appear on the PCD, though Rei looks a bit different. Younger, more the age she was when she was in her own universe, though she doesn't look panicked, and she's sitting on the steps of the Temple of Heaven in her Shinto robes, rather... unimpressed.]

Anyone going to tell me where everyone went? And --

[She hesitates before brushing her bangs out of her eyes, annoyed.]

-- I'm going to need someone to tell me where my cat is.

Third-Person Sample:

One minute, she was sweeping off the front steps of her temple, half-listening to Usagi chatter on about wedding dresses and receptions and how they needed to plan everything out around Ami's hectic school schedule.

The next, she was face down in the dirt on the outskirts of the Safezone.

It took about half a second before instinct kicked in -- Rei rolled onto her back with a startled gasp and her transformation wand was grasped between her fingers. Something had dragged her from home and dropped her into this world and she would be damned if she was caught off guard by some stray idiotic youma that they hadn't killed after --

-- she paused as she shoved herself up onto her hands, staring up at the wall that separated Adstringendum from the Wastelands. It took a few moments for it to click inside her head -- something was missing, something important -- and it was with a startled grasp that Rei rocketed to her feet, a little unsteady and nauseous, but suddenly very sure of where she was.

"Adstringendum," Rei breathed, turning on her heel sharply to get her bearings -- but the name was just that, a name, and she had absolutely no idea where she was. "Did Usagi -- ?"

But the question remained unanswered as she gritted her teeth, closing her eyes to try and seek out something, anything to point her in the right direction. And underneath her headache and nausea, her intuition kicked into high gear, and she refocused her attentions on the south.

Time to figure out whether or not this was some kind of dream or if it was real.

[Rei is in a hall of the Temple of Heaven, which is, miraculously, still fairly intact. Why, you ask? Because a few of the citizens of Adstringendum helped keep the entirely wooden building together -- and Rei, who is wiping a bloody blade clean on her sleeve, focuses on the PCD to address exactly that.

She looks terrible. Exhausted -- because she has not slept in days. Pale -- because she hasn't slept in days and she's been redo-ing the warding in the Temple to allow for most everyone to gain access. And she, to the very well-trained eye, is shaking. Being dismembered doesn't exactly grant well to your nerves, once the adrenaline wears off. But Rei is nothing but stubborn and though her voice is quiet and she sounds almost ill, she still manages to be heard.]

The Temple of Heaven is open to anyone who lost their homes during the attack. The warding will now allow almost everyone within the walls, save for a select few who won't make matters any better. You know who you are. I'm not going to bother naming names. And --

[She pauses before raising her eyes to focus more fully on the camera.]

I wanted to thank anyone and everyone who helped keep this building standing. It wasn't done for me -- but I want to thank you, anyway. This place is my home and the home of a lot of other people who have come through this city and to lose everything -- thank you. And -- like I said, anyone who needs a place to stay, or a shower, or food -- please come here.

For those who don't want to leave their homes -- I control fire. I understand if you don't want my assistance or don't want to ask for it, but please, if there's anything I can do to help control what fires still remain in the city, I want to help. So -- for those who don't know me, my name is Hino Rei, and my feed is always open if you need any help.

[And she presses a button on her PCD to send the coordinates to her location.]

Hey, Adstringendum. I've got a question.

[There's a soft 'thump' and a spray of white as Rei drops backwards into the snow, her PCD falling at an odd angle. The contrast between Rei's dark hair and the white snow is pretty startingly, enough so that you can actually see it in the dark that is the Adstringendum night. She has on a coat, and a red scarf, and you can see her breath, just faintly, forming in the air, as she stares at the stars.

It's been a long week. Sometimes, all you need is a few minutes just to relax.]

81 [Accidental Video]

[Rei is sitting on the edge of her bed, carefully toweling off her hair. It looks like she's just gotten out of the shower, as she's wrapped in a huge towel, and her hair is still wet. Her fingers are carefully working out any knots as she dries out her hair, but the more she works at it, the more her eyes droop, almost as if she's drifting off to sleep.

-- but then she jolts awake, her fingers yanking the towel off of her head as she steels herself to stay awake, but it soon proves to be a fruitful effort, as her eyes just slowly close again. She stays that way, for a long moment, before Rei shakes her head slightly, carefully tucking her towel into place as she reaches up to pin up her hair, in order to begin brushing it out without it getting tangled.]

Just because it's Sunday doesn't mean you can sleep whenever you want, Hino.

[It's quiet, but there's a slight tinge of relief to her tone.

Those dreams are finally going to be over.]

78 [Video] Forwarded to the dawn.

[When she had seen the image, she had thought it wasn't real. Why would she believe it? The very nature of this event was to see people die -- it was just a hallucination. A horrific, horrid, terrible hallucination, but a hallucination all the same. Still, Rei had a feeling in the very bottom of her heart that something was not right -- so she set out to find Hitsugaya. Just to make sure he was okay.

He hadn't picked up his PCD and he obviously wasn't at Juubantai house, otherwise he would have told Hinamori that it wasn't real. So Rei set out to the wall surrounding the city, to his favorite spot to sit whenever he felt upset. No Hitsugaya. She then hopped the wall and went to the Wastelands, to his favorite sparring location -- and then to the second favorite sparring location -- and then the third, the one they frequent whenever they both needed to let off some steam. Still no Hitsugaya. She checked the clinic, the dojo, the fountain in the center of town, the surrounding tall trees, and finally, she had dropped back down on the steps of the Temple of Heaven, with her PCD in her hands, to stare blankly at the ground. It's at this moment that the feed has actually started -- just Rei, on the steps, staring at nothing.

When she speaks, it isn't clear whether or not she knows it's recording -- but her voice is so quiet, and faint, and heartbroken. There are no tears or choked sobs or any of that dramatic nonsense -- but it's obvious, in the way that Rei carries herself -- the way her shoulders slump and her cheeks pale -- that she is positively devastated.]

He's actually dead, isn't he.

[Her fingers curl around the PCD and the feed shakes, ever so slightly, with the change. Her hands are shaking. And if you look carefully, it's obvious that Rei herself is trembling. Almost every single person who has been with her for as long as Hitsugaya Toushirou has been has eventually left for some period of time, but not him. He's practically indestructible. Always the one to drag her away from doing something stupid -- and sometimes the other way around -- but Rei has never had a day pass in Adstringendum where he has not been there to tell her what to do whenever it got to be too much. And now, when it's too much -- way too much -- he isn't here. Temporary or not (oh, if it isn't temporary -- no, Rei can't even consider that as a possibility, because she may very well crack), she can't quite grasp the idea that she can't pick up her PCD and call him to tell him to come over and sit with her. Even if it's silent contemplation of how badly their lives suck. Or for him to tell her to snap out of it and stop being so depressing, because not only did this happen, but Minako -- vanished. Again. And on top of that, Hitsugaya --

She closes her eyes and -- finally, tears roll down her cheeks at the motion, but she doesn't actually cry or sob. Not quite yet. That is going to be reserved for when she's alone. No, instead, she keeps speaking, and while her voice is still quiet, and still positively heartbroken and crushed, there is a fine edge of anger to it now, and it is obvious that Hino Rei knows this is broadcasting to the entire network.]

When he comes back, he's going to tell me what happened to him, and not even God can hide you from what I'll do to you. You'll be punished, and when I find out what he lost because of you, you'll be punished again. Come forward now or hide in your hole like a coward, it doesn't matter to me, but I'll find you.

[He'd do the same for her, after all.]

[Rei is sitting in her fire reading room. She hasn't left it very often since the memory event ended, somewhat obsessed with trying to see glimpses of home through the flames. That and the warmth and fire is a comfort to her -- so she may as well get whatever work she needs to get done finished inside.

For tonight, she has a pile of clothes in front of her that she is mending -- and not only mending, but adding lining to for winter. She has a pile of finished folded clothes to her right -- a coat or two for Minako and Usagi, a longer jacket for Michiru, and she's currently working on dismantling Castiel's coat in order to add lining to it, to ensure he doesn't freeze to death when the snow actually starts. Youma, her cat, is on a pile of untouched clothing, watching Rei with his large blue eyes, tail flicking in boredom.

The needle flashes quickly, in and out, and shows Rei frowning in concentration before the feed ends.]

[There's a silence, for a long moment -- before Rei finally works up the nerve to say something. She sounds tired.]

It's getting a lot harder to keep believing everything has a purpose in this place.

[There's a long rush of air as Rei exhales.]

It's almost as if the Animus don't want us here -- but if that's true, then why have I been here for over a year? Why have some people been here longer? What makes some of us different?

-- if anyone's got any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

[The only people Rei would need to tell, about Haruka vanishing, would be the senshi themselves. And the senshi, being the senshi, already know. So why repeat something painful?

But all the same, she seems to want to say more -- before she ends the feed.]

[Rei is sitting on the floor, her knees to her chest. Her back is pressed against an invisible wall -- a chamber, of sorts, made out of energy. She is perfectly still, breathing slow and even, her eyes fixated on whatever is in front of her.

The feed continues this way for five minutes, then ten -- and still, Rei does not move, save for her fingers moving in tiny intricate designs upon her legs. She doesn't even blink. Her expression is completely blank and neutral, devoid of emotion.

Finally, the priestess speaks, and her tone is perfectly even. She does not look at the camera.]

I know what you did. I saw it. You can hide as long as you want, but I'll find out. I'm not going to stop looking until I know the truth. He deserves more dignity than what you gave him.

[She is silent for a moment or two more before she inhales deeply.]

There's the briefest flash of white as Hino Rei drops her PCD onto the ground, where it bounces lightly. The girl is sopping wet -- aftermath from the abrupt draining of the water from Adstringendum -- but her eyes are bright and she appears happy as can be.

-- and then, fire engulfs her.

It's a column of flame, and it lasts for at least twenty seconds, before it falls away to reveal Mars, in her glory, perfectly dry and unharmed. She looks down at her gloves before grinning to herself, casting a glance down at the PCD, where she notices the red light. Instead of being bothered, Mars picks up the device.]

If this place floods one more time, I'll go to the Animus myself and deliver a complaint.

[But it's hard to take the threat seriously -- Mars looks a lot happier than she has in the past week. With a final smile, the senshi clicks off the feed.

And no, she is not apologizing for waking anyone up.

You people do it to her all the time.]
